Race Night 2009 makes another fantastic contribution to the Sportsfield Clubhouse Fund

November saw a repeat of Race Night at North Marston Village Hall. An excellent turn out and band of willing volunteers ensured it was another fantastic event which raised £1005.50 towards the new Clubhouse fund. THANK YOU!

The sportsfield team decided to donate the profit from one of the races to one of North Marston’s talented sportspeople; Nicky McSweeney who has been selected to represent GB in bobsleigh. This race raised £75.50 which goes towards Nicky’s training fund.

Thanks to everyone who donated a prize for the horse owners to bid for. They included LitreMeter, Karl’s Bakery, The McSweeney’s, The Shottons, The Sportsfield Team, Andi and Becky Swain, A J North, ESRI UK, The Crown at Granborough and Mortimer Estates.

28th December sees another Volunteer Day on the field to catch up with some maintenance and various jobs; perfect for working off those extra Xmas pounds! Contact Trevor Lane on 670100 to let us know if you can come and help. Soup and hot dogs will be served to willing volunteers.

Moving on to 2010, we hope to be successful in raising the necessary funds to build the new Clubhouse which is the final part of the re-development project. Funds are much tighter so this is proving a challenge but one that the team is determined to achieve.

Race Night 2008 makes another fantastic contribution to the Sportsfield Clubhouse Fund

Well it might not have been Ascot or the Grand National but on Saturday 15th November, North Marston Village Hall played host to some of the most competitive horse racing seen for ages. Owners and horses jostled for position, bets were placed at fever pitch and bottles of wine disappeared at a furious pace.

The end result was a fantastic fun evening, which raised a staggering £1,225 profit towards the Sportsfield Fund. THANK YOU to everyone who made the event happen and to all who took part on the night or made a contribution if they were unable to attend. Particular thanks go to the master of ceremonies, Bob (ducking and diving) Webb and his able bookies Paul (the face) McSweeny, Tony (the nod) Kelly and Clive (the calculator) Robinson (and sister in law Debbie). Thanks too to all the working party team and other volunteers for getting the hall ready, especially Helen Shotton for organising ticket sales and the posters to promote the event. And finally, but by no means least, a big thank you to all our race sponsors; Karls Bakery, The Shottons, ESRI UK, Pioneer UK, E3 Business Improvement, CT Mowers, A J North, LitreMeter and Pat Eddery’s Stables.

December will see the existing brick building being re-furbished; Mark Gurney has won the contract to do this work. The second volunteer working day in the Nature Trail area is set for 29th December; perfect for working off those extra Xmas pounds! Contact Trevor Lane on 670100 to let us know if you can come and help.

Moving on to 2009, we will hopefully see better weather to allow the groundworks to be completed so that the field will be properly drained and new pitches for football and cricket established. And our Trim Trail will be up and running. Then moving ever closer to the project’s finishing line the working party will be working hard to raise the necessary funds to build our new clubhouse building. For those who couldn’t make the recent Open Meeting, the plans for the new building have been done and the planning permission application has been submitted.

Weather trying its best to thwart progress on the ground works

Despite the horrendous weather, work progressed on the ground works during August and September. Anyone passing the field (marked by our newly installed sign) will have seen the Somme-like conditions as Agripower used diggers, bull dozers and other large bits of kit to try and level the field prior to drainage pipes being installed. We are now waiting for a suitable period of dry weather to make the last push. So everyone please think positive thoughts for some dry weather!

Unfortunately this delay has had a knock on effect in that our Trim Trail (which has been made and is ready to be installed) cannot be erected until Agripower has finished the drainage works. It also means that we cannot go back to our major grant giver, WREN for more funding for our new clubhouse building. So all in all the typical British weather has literally ‘rained on our parade.’

The working party isn’t disheartened and are still cracking on pulling together all the costings for the new building, completing the planning application for the new building and car parking, organising local fund raisers and sorting out our next volunteer days and school visits. Many of you will have noticed we had a nice write up in the Buckingham & Winslow Advertiser on Sep 5th so it’s not all doom and gloom!

We’ll be hosting an update meeting, this time at North Marston Village Hall, to feed back to those attending our progress and the next steps. The next part of the project requires finding funding for a new clubhouse building so that users are able to host games, get showered and provide hospitality. We will be able to show you the plans at this meeting and take on board any useful suggestions.

Dates for your diary:
Open Meeting – North Marston Village Hall, Nov 13th. This session will bring everyone present up to date on progress and the next steps of the project, specifically the plans for a new Clubhouse building.
Race Night (Fund Raiser) – North Marston Village Hall, Nov 15th
Xmas Bazaar (Fund Raiser) – North Marston Village Hall, Nov 29th
NM C of E School Planting Days – Nov 20th and 21st (to be finally confirmed)
Nature Trail Volunteer Working Day – 22nd Nov and 29th Dec

Please support our fund raising events as even though the smaller ones may only raise a few hundred pounds each time, it all adds to the pot. Thank you to all who enjoyed a fun time at our Quiz Night which raised £162.00 and thanks again go to The McSweeny Family for hosting and Helen Shotton for organising.

Great news for North Marston & Granborough Cricket Club – April 2008

April brought news from Awards for All that the cricket club has been successful in its application for a grant of £10,000 to buy rollers, mower, sight screen, crease marking equipment and practice kit.

The major ground works on the sports field will hopefully take place in May/June (weather allowing) so that the Club should have a useable home ground to play on next year. In the meantime, the practice nets are up and running so look out for practice and training details.

North Marston & Granborough Community Sports Field project moves along with a team from the Vale Countryside Volunteers – 13th February 2008

The start of spring brought fine weather and a team from AVDC’s Countryside Volunteer to locate a number of bird boxes and conduct hedge laying in the Nature trail area.

The team did a great job and anyone wanting to visit the field will notice what amazing progress we’ve made over the last few months.

Local contractor George Cheshire completed major work this week to create a new ditch on the Woodward field and re-vitalised the existing ditch in the sports field. Plus we now have a pond with improved lighting and access together with a newly created pond.

Ground works contractor appointed – January 2008

Agripower, a Great Missenden based agricultural contractor with 40 years experience has been appointed to deliver the new drainage system and pitches for cricket and football.

Work will begin late Spring 08, weather allowing, and it is hoped that the pitches will be in good working order early Autumn.

The work is being funded by a £70,000 grant from WREN Ltd and is part of the ambitious plan to re-develop the recreation ground between North Marston and Granborough.

Bucks TV

At the January volunteer working party day the team was visited and interviewed by Richard Carr from Bucks TV. To see the interview online go to http://www.buckstv.co.uk/nm&gsportsfieldproject.html

More good news for the North Marston & Granborough Community Sports Field Project

November saw confirmation from AVDC & VAHT (Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust) Community Chest for a grant of £15,654 towards work on the project.

This brings the total funds raised for the overall project to re-vitalise the derelict recreation field between North Marston and Granborough to a massive £106,294.

The Community Chest grant has been awarded to pay for the purchase and installation of a Trim Trail and the creation of a Nature Trail including ditch clearing, creation of a pond, erection of fencing and planting of new trees.

This grant comes hot on the heels of the grant awarded by WREN last month so the project team is now working furiously on the detailed project planning and implementation together with ensuring the contractors selected will deliver to time, budget and produce a quality end result.

Fund raising still goes on in earnest as the building of changing and hospitality facilities still needs to be paid for so please ensure you support all the local fund raisers or contact anyone on the team to make a donation.

Anyone wanting more information about the project can call Karen Parks 0n 01296 670417 or Trevor Lane on 01296 670100.

Confirmation of £70,000 grant from WREN Ltd for the North Marston & Granborough Community Sports Field Project

October saw confirmation from WREN Ltd that we have been successful in our application for a grant of £70,000 to pay for the ground works to improve drainage and establish pitches for cricket and football. AVDC is providing a grant of £7,700 for the third party contributing funding. In total this brings the amount raised so far to approx £90,000, which is a good half way towards the total required to complete the entire project. Thanks to everyone who has made a donation or supported our fund raising events thus far.

Work will begin on the ground works next Spring but in the meantime we need help preparing the coppice and pond for the new Nature Trail so please contact one of the team and keep an eye open for the dates when we’ll make a start.

Local fund raising events and requests for donations will continue starting with the Working Party taking a stall at the North Marston Xmas Bazaar and manning the Xmas float provided by the Rotary Club. Please support both of these events, as this will contribute to the funding pot.

Involving the communities of both villages is one of the critical success factors of the Working Party’s plan so with this mind an Open Meeting took place at Granborough Village Hall on September 24th. The meeting was an opportunity for residents to meet the Working Party team, to hear about the project in more detail and ask any questions. With standing room only, the meeting was a great success and the team would like to thank everyone that came along and made useful suggestions and comments, which we will incorporate in the business plan.

Open Meeting – Granborough Village Hall, Monday 24th September

The NM&G Community Sports Field project team hosted an Open Meeting to explain to villagers what the project entails and our progress to date. The meeting attracted around 45 people, included a small exhibition presenting the project in visual detail and a drinks reception. Download PowerPoint File
to see a copy of the main presentation. Thank you to everyone who came.
